Monday training

This past week has been just aweful eating wise. It was a stress-fest-o-rama. Hopefully most of that stress will be abating.

Anyways, the trainer dragged me kicking and screaming and pleading to the scale. OK, not literally but I really tried to get out of it. But somehow, I was down 0.6 (187.2) Does not make sense!!! Next Monday I cannot workout with him so I won't be on the scale again until next Friday. I'd better be in the 185s by then. However, I have a weekend away of eating out between now and then.

As for my 21 day challenge.... I have not made 6 vegetables every day but I have been doing my pushups and dips. Strangely enough the pushups and dips are getting easier. Who knew? I have not given up on the 6 servings of veggies I am just not perfect at it.

Angie if you are reading this, I hope you are doing OK. Your sister in law's death is so tragic but also the timing for you must make it worse since I know how hard it is to deal with having a newborn. Take care of yourself.

Sunday Run

Met Nickiechickie at 8am for a run down by the creek. Very nice! Many bugs but we spray ourselves good so they didn't get us.

My Garmin was misbehaving. As we started running it said my heart rate was 89. Ya right. Later it got as low as 48. Stupid thing. Nickiechickie kept track of the 10 & 1s. Not only is the heart rate part malfunctioning, it is not communicating with my computer and the battery went from 100% to 77% in just one run. Ug.

We ran 8kms in 65:05. Not too bad. I can honestly say even though I didn't know my heart rate I was putting in a good effort.

Cool part of the run, when we were almost back to the cars we saw a group of elite looking runners coming at us. All of the sudden we hear a happy yelling and there was out long lost running buddy Carolyn who we have not seen in forever. She is one of the original 8 running friends that met in 2001. Some of us have been sidetracked by kids but Carolyn had already had her kids and has gone on to marathons and Ironmans just like Hazel. She looked really awesome.

My kids are being so grouchy. They were up way past their bedtime on Friday and then we had them out all day yesterday dealing with buying a car. (peeps that know me we are changing out both our vehicles for something different all together, radical!) Hopefully their behavior will improve because right now they are 'ellions!

Brick

So in the Triathlon world a "brick" workout is one where you bike and then run immediately after. My trainer been trying to get me to come out to a brick workout in a local park. The first 2 weeks I had excuses (husband was away, plans with work friends) but on Monday I told him that I was out of excuses.

So at work today I get an voicemail from trainer reminding me about the brick. I think "Thats nice, maybe I should go". So I call up Hazel. Nope, Hazel can't go. I call up other friend Michelle, voicemail. Hmmm... Do I really want to go to this without backup? Hmmm... not really. Get home. Oh look, another voicemail from trainer. Guess I'd better go. Husband kicks me out the door and a way I go.

We started with an 8K ride on the pathway. That is a tad bit weird because I am used to riding on the shoulder of big open road with no obstacles to worry about. At one point I end up on the grass avoiding some roller bladers. Whoops! I remind myself that I am not on my mountain bike and that Road Bike + Grass = Not a good idea. At least it was not gravel.

There was a crazy wind but the 8K on the pathway was pretty easy away from the wind, and then really hard into the wind. I got to meet D who I have been hearing about and she is really nice. She is doing Ironman this year and is older than me. One more person to derive inspiration from. Anyways, I could not keep up to her and you know what? That was great! It kind of kicked me in the butt and made me want to try harder and drop these 20 something pounds so that I can go faster too.

Anyways... part 2 of the bike workout was up this ridiculously long and steep hill. The hill kicked my ass. It took me 6 minutes and 26 seconds to get up it. I was breathing like there was no tomorrow but I did it! Lots of burning lactic acid in the legs, then Oh Joy! we did it again. Thankfully it was only 2 times. However, I really wished I had my Mountain Bike at that point because it has easier gears.

After all that we did a 4K (well apparently 3.94k run) and I did it in 24:31. Wait! That means that when I try I am not super slow? What the heck? Maybe there is hope for me after all! Apparently I just need people to chase and keep up with.

Thanks for you comments on my previous posts. Both Fatinah and Hazel made points about my heart rate. I am going to aim to monitor my heart rate during my run and keep it in the 160s. That is a decent effort for me. To heck with worrying about what my speed is.

Seabreeze: Thanks for the kick. You are right. I can still do a half marathon. I was being a wuss. I am only in week 2 and the long runs are only 7K. There is no reason that I can't do that!

Bleh

People, I am a disaster. Eating has been a F- for 3 days now. The prospect of weighing on Monday is not scaring me. Tuesday I was so stressed that I ate no fewer than 8 pieces of bread in on sitting. WTF is that?

I am not even enjoying running. Could the Garmin be the culprit? Is knowing how slow I am actually running depressing me? Quite possibly yes.

Husband is suggesting that I stop using it for a while and only use it for my long run if that. Husband also thinks I should give the fall half a pass and maybe just do some local 10 Ks.

Ug. Mojo, come back to me!

Tuesday

Today is a run day. I have not actually planned out what I am going to do but I will get something done. It should probably be something hilly. I need to consult my schedule.

You guys are hilarious with your comments on my previous post. I am sure my trainer would be mortified to see that not only did I post his photo on my blog but that random Internet ladies are calling him cute. Too funny! Hazel, don't tell him! :)

So over on Youtube Zurplemoon put out a 21 day challenge. Now, my track record with challenges has been Horrible! But anyways, Zurple's challenge was to just challenge yourself to do something for 21 days, anything as long as it was not related to the scale. Smart lady! So I challenged myself to eat 6 servings of vegetables a day. Ug. Normally I probably eat one. Not kidding. I can easily eat 4 serving of fruit without blinking but am not a big veggie eater. I also challenged myself to do 21 pushups (from the knees) and 21 tricep dips a day for 21 days.

Yesterday I got the excercise challenges in but then found myself eating a cup of left over steamed broccoli at 9:30pm. How bizarre!!!

Right now I am eating a WWs frozen dinner for lunch. It has a tonne of spaghetti sauce on it, certainly a 1/2 cup. Do I count that as a serving of vegetables? Sounds like cheating but hmmm....

First Trainer Weigh In.

As I mentioned in this post I somehow came up with the brilliant plan of making myself weigh in in front of my trainer. I've been working with him for 8 months and I've always been vague about my weight. Needless to say I was pretty nervous.

Verdict: 187.8. Pretty much the same weight that I was at New Years. Trainer says he wants me at 185 by next Monday. Lose 2.8? Maybe... Its not like I've been eating like and angel so it could be possible. The lowest I've been since the arrival of my first kid 5 years ago is 182. Right now my goal is to get to 160.

I told my trainer to look mean and point at the scale and I'll probably be posting this on my fridge

Hi Farha!

I got an email from a Youtube blogging friend and she had some questions for me so here are my answers.

Can you describe what the program of your personal trainer-twin (hihihi!) is? or how he adapts it to you?

Well, most often the personal training is 15 minutes of cardio then about 35 minutes of free weights and ab excercises, lunges, or squats. He usually has me two sets of each excercise with 15 reps each. He always pairs two things up together so that I am never resting. For example it will start out with pushups and then up and down the stairs carrying 10 pound weights, then pushups again and stairs. Then on to something else. Generally we do a chest exercise, a bicep, a tricep, a back, a leg (walking lunges or squats or hopping on a stair and landing into a squat type of thing) and various abs. It is always different every time which is cool.

What significant difference do you notice for your muscles when you run on the treadmill, run outside, use the elliptical? Do you think we can replace running outside by running on a treadmill? It would be cool I think sometimes....

I cannot remember the last time I ran on the treadmill. I don't have one at home and I really dont' get to the gym. I have thought of getting one though but where to put it? I already have an Elliptical in my living room :)

Do you think that training for a half marathon and a half Ironman triathlon is an unconscious way to schedule time for yourself out of these busy family responsibilities? I don’t think so, but if this is the case, why not, honestly, who would blame a person for challenging herself, for doing sport, and wanting a healthy lifestyle? No body.

Most definately! I didn't do too badly after 1 kid. I even ran pushing him in a stroller starting at 3 months. But after the second one I did nothing for myself excercise wise and gained a lot of weight. Part of that was that I had some problems with my feet and hips after the second one but a lot of it was just being devoted to being a mom and not thinking of myself.

Woaw ! This Hazel is awesome!!

Absolutely! One of her best qualities is that she is not afraid to try things and does not give up even when things look impossible.

Here in China they have an expression to encourage people. It‘s like: “go! girl” or “you can do it” you know this kind of things. They say “JIA YO” it literally means “add oil”. They say it all the time (especially that now they are now preparing for the Olympics) “JIA YO”. So I tell you “JIA YO” from China….You can do it, YOU WILL DO IT!

Thanks! I really appreciate your support!

Saturday & Sunday

Saturday:

2 hour bike ride outside with Hazel. Totally loved it. Garmin said I burned 1600 calories. Having trouble believing that although it was hilly.

Sunday:

7:15am run with Nickiechickie. Only got 6.5kms in. Speed of running causing me to re-evaluate whether doing a half in October is the best idea. Wondering if I should just work on getting stronger/faster first.

8:30am: 60 minutes easy on random on Elliptical. 600+ calories.

Eating is still *meh* even with the impeding weigh in with the personal trainer tomorrow. Could be worse so so all is not lost.

What have I done?

You know how sometimes you say something and it sounds like a good idea when it comes out of your mouth, then some time later you think. Damn, I am not going to like doing that!

Well today at lunch I was talking to a co-worker about possibly doing Jenny Craig because I just like the idea of having all my meals planned for me and ready to go. My biggest problem is that I don't grocery shop regularly, don't plan ahead, then find myself after work with nothing to eat and in goes the processed crap.

Anyways, this coworker was talking about the fact that she thought the key to sucess was being accountable to someone once a week on the scale.

I have not been accountable lately. I have not been saying on this blog what I weigh. I have not been saying that the scale has being going up and up. I have not been saying that I have not been journaling my food. Etc.

Well I though about Jenny and WWs and how they both could be a way to be accountable on the scale. But I have done WWs before. I have bought up weeks worth of coupons and then stopped going when I know I've done badly and watched those prepaid tickets expire at the end of the year. But you know, the thing about WWs is that those scale ladies do not know me... they do not notice if I don't show up.

But you know who does know me? You know who does see me every week? You know who I would be embarassed to step on the scale in front of? Have you guessed what I regret doing?

I just finished my personal training session with my (28 year old, male, superfit) trainer. My run was horrible. HORRIBLE! I was dying and I was going so slow. So right near the end I say to him... "You know what might work, humiliation. Maybe I should step on the scale every Monday with you"

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!!!!!! What have I done? This is going to suck. But maybe, just maybe it will kick my ass enough to finally get rid of the extra fat I carry around. I have been working out too long to not be seeing results. It all comes down to the eating. I know that. But now I have gone and said something I immediately regretted. But maybe it will help.... Argh!

Thursday

So, scary lack of excercising going on around here.

Tuesday I was supposed to do hills but husband had a work thing. I think he got home at 8:30 and by then I had rationalized that I would do my Tuesday run on Wednesday and my Thursday run on Friday. I did easy Elliptical for 45 minutes and it was not as easy as it used to be. It was not hard but I did not burn as much as I used to.

Wednesday husband has his regularly scheduled night time thing and I have to take the kids to soccer. I had planned on doing my run before soccer but before I could tell husband that he asked if he could go do his workout before his evening thing. OK I say and tell him that I had thought to run before soccer. He says he'll be home by 8:30 and I can go then. It clouds over during soccer and I start to make excuses in my head. Husband does not come home until 9:30 and I am not going out for a run then.

So now it is Thursday, I am supposed to go out to dinner with some work friends. This *never* happens, like really. I can't remember the last time I went out with friends to dinner. Seriously. Like maybe 5 years ago? Anyways, I have brought my running stuff to work. I figure I will go to the Y and do my run, then shower up and meet the girls for dinner. That would be a victory.

This is a bad start to my half marathon training but I will try not to dwell on it.

One of my blogger friends has been in labour since Monday. Poor girl. I've been thinking about her and checking her husband's blog constantly. Hopefully today will be the day. (Labour has started and stopped a number of times but this time it looks like it is going to happen). Good luck Angie!

Monday

Well, the weekend away could have gone better. The Energy Vampires (aged 5 & 3) sucked the life out of me and by the time husband got back to the hotel Saturday afternoon I wimped out and did not excercise. Sunday was not condusive to doing my run while away and when we got home, again I slothed out.

I had my personal training today so that is good. I had thoughts of making up my Sunday run but alas, husband has a work thing and won't be home until who knows when tonight. My mom had her first day of work today. Yes, that's right friends that know me. I said my mom! The job she applied for back in February finally worked out. Sooo.... no dropping the kids over there and going for a run. Also, the boy has soccer tonight until 7:30. Oh well. Maybe I could got out at 11pm. Ha Ha. As if!

I am supposed to do hills with some people tomorrow but that is not looking likely since husband has a work thing again tomorrow. If my mom was not working I would try and get her to help then. We'll see.

Edit:

Just thought I would add this for Fatinah. Here is a photo of my husband at his race. And just lookey who he is riding beside. Can't recognize him? He is a certain Albertan trainer, first name Paul. Pretty hilarious. I had no idea when I snapped this. I was just trying to get my husband.

Friday

Had personal training today. It was a good workout even though my muscles did not feel very strong. Doing 5 pound lateral raises was surprisingly tough.

No run scheduled for tomorrow. We have gone north again for another race (husband). This time we are here for 2 nights. So it really depends on his schedule whether or not I make it to the hotel gym tomorrow. I have not worked out in a gym for a long time. I would probably be bored to tears without the ability to watch my DVDs (did not bring the personal DVD player). Maybe I will get a short run in.

Anyways... Have a great weekend peeps!

Thursday Run

The schedule called for a 20 minute 'hard' run. Husband was away and I got home at 4:35. I could have skipped it (since there were black clounds and I had seen lightning) and it was my only opportunity to run before I had to get the kids but I gave it a go and got it done. It sprinkled on me a little bit but when I got home there was not a black cloud to be seen.

I tried to run 'hard' keeping my heart rate in the 160s (170s would be puke-tastic). My pace averaged 6:54 per km. I started out at 6:30s and gradually slowed down. Hopefully at the end of my 16 week training program I will be able to run somewhat faster.

Yes I did!

Yes, I did go do hills in the pouring rain. Look at me go! :)

I showed up at ye olde Running Room and sat in my car waiting to see if runner-guy would show up. I saw some other people that I remembered from run club so I went into the store and then runner-guy did show up. (did I mention this guy is in his 60s?)

The other people (including the 10K clinic leader) said: No! don't go do hills! It is too rainy! Luckily runner-guy was still game although we went and did the girlie neighborhood hills instead of the bad-ass hill. Better that than no hills (although my half marathon training has not officially started, it is good to get a head start). It did not rain too hard while we were out there. I was wearing my husband's waterproof cycling jacket (which I know pisses him off) because I don't have a running jacket that is remotely waterproof. Thats ok, in a few more weeks the rain will be over and it will be back to a desert around here.

So... I now have a new nerdy gadget. As a belated birthday present (to be fair he tried to get me one for my birthday but none were available) my husband got me the latest Garmin Forerunner 405. What is that? It is a speed and distance monitor in the form of a watch (no foot pod although it has an optional one you can buy for added accuracy and for use inside?). It works on GPS. I didn't quite know how to work it yesterday but I am looking forward to using it on my next run on Thursday. I think I have figured it out. Now I can run all over the place and still know how far I went and know my speed at any given time. This can be a dangerous thing but I will try not to be corrupted by wanting to run a certain speed. It is neat to have all the data afterwards though. Very cool.

125 Days Left

Apparently I have 125 days left until my fall half marathon (my second one ever, the last one having been 6 years ago). Exciting times!

Two of my close running pals are out of commision. One with a broken leg and one with a cranky knee. My third friend had an excellent kid-free evening out Saturday night so that left me with no running partner on Sunday morning. So instead of running alone I decided to go to the Running Room and hook up with their run club. I was glad I did.

I was a little nervous because I have felt like a really slow runner lately. There was a 10K clinic doing a 8K long run and that sounded like a good idea so I went with them. They had 4 pace options and I chose the slowest one (being scared that I was so slow and all). Turns out I could definately have run with the 3rd group but I had a nice run and it was quite easy. I had done that run about a month ago and this time I felt much stronger so that made me happy :)

In other exciting news I am going to do my first ever triathlon in July. I'm going to do the sprint because I like the idea of a 5K run instead of 10K. I might do a second one in August, not sure though because that one involves travel. I had made a goal to do a triathlon but was waffling on it. It will be good to actually do it.

In even more shocking news my husband signed me up for a *BIG* race next June. Yep, I am signed up for a Half Ironman triathlon. Again it is far enough away that it is not a scary idea. When that race comes along I will have been on my health and fitness quest for 2 years. (having been inspired into action by my girl Hazel)

So at run club on Sunday I ran with this group leader guy (older guy) and he said he was going to go do hills on Tuesday (today). Great! I said I would meet him. Now today it is frigid and pouring rain. I wonder if he will be there? I will show up. If I say I will meet you for a run, I will be there. I would love to do that run today. I hope he is there because I don't want to go by myself (simply because I would have to run through some isolated spots to get there). Kind of silly when I am (kind of) afraid to run there myself yet am willing to go run with some man that I just met. Silly girl!

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Friday I had personal training. Trainer took me out for a 15 minutes run (we always do 15 minutes of cardio at the beginning but usually it is on the Elliptical or bike trainer). He got me to run faster which was good. He did this by running slightly ahead of me instead of with me. When he does that I seriously feel like a pet who is out on a walk with their master. It is pretty funny. It does work to get me to go faster but I don't kill myself trying to keep up with him.

Saturday I was back at my mom's house. I realize that helping her get her house ready to sell has made me very angry and stressed. It is screwing with my diet but it will be over soon I hope. I am angry because my mom has just turned 60 but is so out of shape that she can barely go upstairs without needing to sit down afterwards. She has heart disease, and type I diabetes. Both of these things contribute to her ill health. Her ill health makes her need help with this whole house selling thing. Of course I want to help my mother but deep inside I am angry. Anyways, on Friday when I got there I ate a bunch of cookies at her house (like 7). Yesterday as I took another one I actually looked at the nutritional info. They are 100 calories each. Seriously. Another stress has been that my husband was away for 10 days. He came back yesterday so that is stress lifted off me.

I did not excercise yesterday. That was not planned. It was because of spending the day working on my mom's house. Today I am up early planning to do my 'long' run. I also want to make a food plan for the week today. I do not dare step on the scale. I am also going back to my mom's house today. My sister and I are going to go there tomorrow too for the whole day and do as much as possible then leave the rest to her. I hate getting into the situation of parenting my parent. Reminds me too much of growing up.

Hazel Strikes Again!

My inspirational friend Hazel has done it again. She's done another half ironman. Thats a 2km (1.25 mi) swim, 93k (58 mi)bike ride and then a 21.1k (13mi) run. This was her third (I think) half ironman and she has also done Ironman Canada. Pretty impressive for someone in the 50+ age group category. Go Hazel!!! Our other 50 something friend also did another half ironman (a different one). These ladies are prime examples of what you can achieve if you put your mind to it.

Fuzzy Bunnies and other Things.

Yep, I stayed under 60 minutes of Internet yesterday and I'm doing pretty good today. I've mowed the lawn, trimmed the giant hedge, got the garbage and recycling ready for tomorrow. I am trying to work really hard because I am supposed to be working doing 'paid' work and I sent the kids to daycare and stayed home to get crap done. I made a list and am trying to get stuff off it. I was kind of paralized with freaking out over stuff I have been avoiding like the plague. Stupid stuff like balancing the bank account, submitting benefit claims that are approaching a year since the date they were incurred.

Anyways... I just know that I spend too much time just doing nothing on here. I like to blog sure, I like to read blogs but when they are all read I find myself sitting here mindless reading crap like PerezHilton TMZ when I am surrounded (literally) but piles of stuff that should have a home. Really, my desk is almost always a disaster zone. I have a 'craft' room that I don't craft in. It is not too too bad but I have not upacked since I went away on a Scrapbooking retreat in March. Seriously. I have not printed off photos for possibly a year. I have not backed up my photos either (that's on my list of things to do). Imagine the freak out I would have if I lost all my photos?

I am trying to get as much done before going to get the kids and I want to do my half hour hilly run in before getting them too. Husband has been away for a week so I've been single parenting it. There have been some bad moments. (Yelling at the top of my voice "Stop Yelling!!!!", where is the logic in that? The 3&5 year old angels just laughed at me and they were right.)

My Food Jouraling streak ended yesterday. I'm OK with that. I will start another streak tomorrow. Sometimes I need to just have a day when I don't think about weight loss. Truly it drives me bonkers to be constantly thinking about it every hour of the day. What I should really do is sit down, write out exactly what I am going to eat for the week. Print it off and then follow that. Takes the thinking out of it. I'd just have to follow instead of think, how many calories do I have left... what can I have?

One more day until the second to last episode of BSG. Fatinah: I read somewhere that the other 10 episodes won't be airing until sometime in 2009. Stupid show!

In other news I scared this little cutie when I was weed whacking. Don't worry, I didn't whack him. He is so tiny, must have just left his 'nest' No mama anywhere to be seen but I'm pretty sure that is normal. We have these Jack Rabbits all over our neighborhood. You can't go 10 blocks without seeing one. This guy was smaller than a Guinea Pig.

Too much Internet

OK, I am pretty sure my house would be a lot neater, I would maybe backup my photos and actually print some (let alone maybe scrapbook them) and maybe cook some muffins or something if I spent less time watching Vlog videos and reading blogs.

So, here is my experiment. I've got my Pampered Chef timer on Count up mode and when I get to 60 minutes, thats it, no more Internet for the day. Is this going to be as bad as coming off Heroin? If I run out of my 60 minutes I will have to do today's excercise blog tomorrow. Right now I'm sitting at 13 minutes and I've just read a few blogs and made maybe 4 comments. Oi vey!!!

Buh bye for now!

Summer Challenge Update

My goal in the summer challenge was to lose 6 pounds. I have something like 18 days left to do that. (and currently have to lose 6.4)

Bordering on impossible. Highly improbable. I give myself a 2% chance of making it and that is being generous.

At this point I am saying to myself: "Stop making scale goals you idiot! They only make you feel bad when you don't make it!"

Tuesday

Today is a better day than yesterday. Funny how that works. I was pretty peeved when I wrote yesterday's post. Tired of always thinking/worrying/planning about weight and food issues.

Planned run: 25 minutes easy - done - 289 calories

Extra: 1 hour on Elliptical - 60 minutes - resistance 6 - random program - 633 calories

Still carrying on my Food Journaling streak. By the end of today I will have completed 6 days in a row. When I make it to 14 it will be pretty sweet. If I make it to 60 it will be seriously good on my part.

Now to make it to the end of the day without having some sort of food attack. Thats the same for every day though :)

Monday

Here is the ugly truth of my food journal. And some calories are no doubt missing.

On the positive front I did my 50 minute strength workout with the trainer today and also did an hour easy-ish on the Elliptical. Since I've gone over my calories part of me wants to do some more cardio to make up for it. Not a good idea though because my feet will get mad at me.

I've poked around SparkPeople a bit more. They have a meal plan posted that I could follow. Maybe I should do that. That would require cooking what is on the list though... I''m pretty sure I would not keep that up.

Not a happy camper today.

Sunday

Got to run with Dinograd and NickieChickie. Yippeee. Dino's hubby watched my kids in addition to their 2. Apparently he read the paper so it couldn't have been too bad :) Rode my bike over to my mom's again today. Saved more gas! OK, its only 7km round trip but hey :) Avoided the extra calories at her house that jumped into my belly yesterday in the blink of an eye. Damn you unexpected giant bowl of chips. Today I defeated you! Mwahahahahaaaaaa.

Run: 46 minutes (10 & 1's) - 600 calories
Cycling pulling kids: 381 calories

My legs are still tired from Friday's stair episode with the trainer. Calves hurt until my run when they must have gotten stretched out or something.

Journaling Streak: Kept a food journal since May 29th: 4 days
Calorie Streak: Day 1 of 6 planned of being under 1900. (went slightly over yesterday so had to reset that) Next food 'rest' day Sat. June 7th.
(my Fitday Journal is here)

P.S. Not to worry about me falling off my bike yesterday. It totally didn't hurt since I fell onto grass and dirt! :)
