Cool Post on Beginning Running

Yo catwoman. Go read this.

http://mizfitonline.com/2010/06/23/running-getting-started/

I really agree with her when she says
"In the last three years of running I’ve determined three simple steps to developing a love of running are: take care of your feet, never give up, and don’t burn out."

-- especially the feet part. Feet are the weakest link... at least for me. Other bodyparts also try to act up but ultimately the feet are the root of it all. Be good to your feet. Don't forget to buy new shoes even if your shoes don't seem worn. You won't know how worn they actually are until you put on new ones and are amazed at the difference.

-- also agree with the run a 5K part and find running friends.

Monday

Monday:
1 hour with personal trainer at noon.
Later walked half way home from work (rode bus from work and got off with 5K to go)

Did I mention that my personal trainer is getting an office job in September and will no longer training people? I have been with him for 3 years and he is totally nice and fun and makes the time fly. He is set to become a dad in the next month and has decided to change careers. Maybe it is time to learn how to do these weights and exercises on my own at a gym. That would be a lot easier on the pocket book. I will miss working out with him though. He does have a protege that I could continue on with. I'm not sure what I will do. With buying a new house (that could use some upgrading) spending less money would be a good idea. However, the good thing about having a weekly appointment is that I always go. If it was just going to the gym I could see how that might be swept aside for something else. We'll see. I have a little while to think about it.

Sunday Report

Wow, I seem to be a real blog slacker these days. Could be that I am busy packing up stuff to move or it could just be that I don't have much to stay?

I was on a real walking kick for a while there. One day I even walked almost all the way home from work (I walked about 9k. 11k would have got me home). That was a looooooooong ass walk. The only reason I didn't walk all the way was that my son has to be at his last hockey thingie and husband was running late. I never planned on walking all the way home. It just sort of happened. Anyways... maybe walking that long all of the sudden is not such a good idea.

Since then my knees have been a bit whinge-y (how do you spell that?) and it has been a little bit freaky. Words out of my mouth lately: "Have I wrecked my knees?" "Am I screwed for the rest of my life?" "I'm too young for knee surgery!" quickly following by "If I did get knee surgery how long would that buy me until I needed it again?" and a lot of "Stupid knees!"

I think maybe I just overdid it with the walking combined with running downhill at bootcamp the week previously (that is totally something I don't normally do). Anyways... now I am super cautious. I'm hoping that it was just a warning shot over my bow and if I take it easy for a week more that I will be back to normal.

I did go back to my last day of bootcamp yesterday but I just walked down the hill.

Today I got to go for a bike ride in the countryside with my husband. It was so great! We actually had a real live babysitter who was not my mother take care of the kids while we were out cycling!!! WOW!!!

Paging Hazel to her bike. Lets ride!

Tuesday

Hello!

I am back from the land of 4-days-without-children-vacationing. Some day I would love to go to the land of 7-days-without-children-vacationing but hey, I will take what I can get.

We had a nice time and we even got some exercising in. We did some walking, hiked up a big hill and cycling. I even cycled by that spot that had a landslide. Geesh! That is kind of freaky! Seriously, I cycled on that exact patch of road that is now covered in dirt a mere day before it happened. Weird!

I love love love that part of the country. The whole time my husband and I plotted how we could spend more time there. Could we buy a place there? Could we tow a trailer (that we don't have) and set up camp there for the summer? No we cannot. Not at this point in our lives but hey, maybe sometime in the future.

We had fancy dinners at two great wineries. The food was amazing and the view even better. *sigh*. so so nice!

Anyways... today on the way to work I got my husband to let me out of the car half way and I walked the rest of the way (5.5km).

My right knee is a little grouchy right now. I am a little freaked out about running and have been avoiding it (mostly scared that the extra pounds I am carrying would be mucho bad for my knees, hip and feet). I first noticed the knee pain running downhill at bootcamp. I should have stopped immediately but nooooooo... I didn't. Oh well. Hopefully it is nothing permanent.

Saturday

Saturday was bootcamp day. Last week's bootcamp was super good because it was inside and we got to use the gym equipment so more upper body work. I was sore for days.

This week was good too because there were only 3 of us and at first there were only 2. Usually I do it at my sister's pace which is not my pace. This week she was late so I did it at the-other-girl's pace. Much more challenging (no offense to my sis).

On another note: I put out a video on YT basically saying I wasn't going to make a bunch of videos about trying to lose weight. I am sick to death of doing it and undoing it. I said I would make a video when I had actually done something like lose 20 pounds. I am making an effort right now, I just am not going to document it in videos out of fear of having to repeat myself in a year.

It is really hard to beat the mental barrier. My biggest mental barrier is this. I've lost weight before and gained it back. The logical state of things is: if I lose it I will gain it back. I see it in other people too. This is the way things tend to happen so logically that is likely how it will be. Yes, a self defeating attitude I know but it is really hard to see past the logic.

You know that wildly successful self help book told people that you just had to think about things happening and they would happen? Well I thought that was complete crap but maybe there is a small grain of truth to it. I have to believe I can do it. I have to leave logic behind and take a leap of faith that I actually can be what I want to be. I have to somehow thing positively. Maybe I have never actually believed that I can do it???

I have spent my life thinking in a negative manner. I am a glass half empty kind of person. Maybe that is the root of things?

I was raised by a recklessly positive person. She is over the top positive and maybe I learned early on that what she says does not always happen. I actually get annoyed at inflated optimism.

So anyways... I have got the exercise on track. I am not running but I am moving. I just am quite afraid of wrecking something by running at this weight. I am not 25 anymore and the body is not as forgiving.

I have decided that when we move I AM buying a treadmill. To hell with saving money. Some things are worth it. I can walk on an incline for long stretches of time and the incline puts my heart rate up. Once I can run more a treadmill will get me through the cold ass winter.

Anyways... blah to the blah blah.

Thursday

Thursday I decided to leave work a half hour before my husband and walk towards home and he would pick me up along the way.

I walked and walked and walked for what seemed like a really long way. I think it was about an hour or so but there were traffic lights slowing me down towards the beginning.

When I checked mapmyrun it turns out I only walked 5 and a half kms. I was slightly disappointed but still happy that I had done that instead of sitting on my ass in the car.

Sunday, Monday

Sunday - no exercise. Not many total steps. Like less than 4000? Legs were sore from Saturday boot camp. Sore = good. Means I did something hard. I had a lot of things to go (thanks to my serious procrastination streak combined with my 5 year old's birthday party)

Monday - lots of steps! Walked for almost an hour in the morning. Total "aerobic" steps 8000ish. I took the pedometer off at 3pm so I don't know what my total steps were. Over 10,000 for sure. Also had 1 hour personal training session.

One day about 2 weeks ago I worked myself into a huge tizzy. I was so upset with my life/kids/stuff that I could barely function. I could not even get myself to go to work. It was bad. I was very distraught. I know it was amplified by stupid pms hormones but all the same it sucked. I hated everything and was tired of my kids being rotten tomatoes to me pretty much daily. If I could have run away from my life I would have. I think I even scared my husband (ie. made him quite worried about me).

I have been better since then. However today something really good happened. My mom started back at her old part time job - ie. she is coming to my house at 6:30am and taking the kids to school/daycare for me and I am driving to work with my husband. This means:
a) no battle of wills with kids to get them to school on time (while I try to get myself ready) - so less stress!
b) no paying for parking for me (balanced out by paying my mom but I'd rather she have the $$$)
c) getting to work at 7am instead of 9:15 - so more hours to work instead of barely getting 7 hours in
d) because of c) I can actually stop for a break/lunch during the day (and go out of the office if I want to) and still get a full day of work in. I could go for a walk like normal office people can do!

YIPEEE

Only downside is getting up at 6am. That is a price I am willing to pay!

This is good!

Back on topic...

My exercise plan is still pretty basic. Personal trainer once a week. Boot camp once a week. Get in at least 5000 continuous (aka aerobic according to my pedometer) steps per day either walking/eliptical or run/walking. (but allowing myself a lazy day a week if I need one). I am pausing on the running front because my foot has been giving me grief and I know it is caused by the extra pounds that need to be gone. I need to restrict my calories to get those pounds gone. Story of my life. Broken record. blah blah blah.

I need to also get myself in the saddle and get cycling. Husband brought my bike back from the storage unit so hopefully I can get riding it again even if it is indoors. Maybe tonight after the small humans are retired for the night.
